In advance of Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) this image appeared to me. This is not the usual way I develop ideas for paintings and I felt a strong need to carry this idea to completion in the form of a finished painting. At a deeper level, this may symbolize the struggle to ensure the safety of the next generation of indigenous women. Or could it represent finally breaking the surface of truth and reconciliation with Canadians of generations of indigenous people?
